Animal Caretaker

We are currently looking for a Full Time Animal Caretaker

(Evenings and Weekends) (Kennel/Housekeeping)

     We are in search of a person with energy self-motivation, high ethical standards, who is thoughtful, compassionate, thorough and has a good sense of humor. 

     We are one of the largest, full service small animal hospitals in the Capital District.  We currently have 10 doctors and over 60 staff.  We care for about 22,000 pets from 13,000 families.  We see about 120 patients and perform 10-15 anesthetic procedures a day.  We strive to provide the best of care for every patient.  We act as a referral hospital for some diagnostic and surgical procedures for other local hospitals.

Primary Job Responsibilities include but are not limited to the following:

  • Overall cleanliness of the facility (sweeping, mopping, vacuuming, empting trash, & disinfecting all surfaces using appropriate cleaning agents)
  • Maintain all areas in a manner that is free of odor & fire hazards
  • Maintain patience & self-control while handling all animals
  • Walking all dogs 4 times daily
  • Cleaning all dog & cats cages/runs daily
  • Feeding all cats & dogs daily
  • Marking cage cards with adequate information
  • Bathing animals as needed
  • Washing all food & water dishes using dishwasher
  • Launder all towels & bedding & restock appropriate areas
  • Properly dispose of all recycling
  • Incinerator- following proper guidelines regarding cremation of animals, collection of remains, proper labeling & disposal of remains
  • Appropriate use of personal safety devices
  • Stocking & restocking of all pet food, litter, & hospital supplies
  • Proper use of steam & gas sterilization
  • Properly clean & prepare surgical packs
  • Maintain safe walkways (shoveling, salting)
  • Clean up animal feces on hospital grounds
  • Water flowering plants & shrubs
  • Assist in animal handling in any area of the hospital as requested
  • Practice good customer service skills
  • Perform grocery, hardware, & pharmacy pickups as directed
  • Perform special projects as requested (painting, etc.)
  • Perform weekly & monthly calendar jobs
  • Participates in staff meetings
  • Job Specifications:

                    Education – None

                    Licensure – None

                    Experience – prior experience helpful but not required

                    Skills – basic computer skills helpful

                    Physical Effort – Lifting & carrying up to 40lbs, bending, pulling, & standing for periods are required

  • Hours of work: Variable length shifts designated to meet the needs of the facility.
  • Holidays and weekends are required.
